SCESL Welcomes Dr. John Atkinson and Introduces CASCADE Project

Today, the Scajaquada Creek Environmental Science Lab (SCESL) was excited to welcome Dr. John Atkinson, an environmental engineer from the University at Buffalo. Dr. Atkinson shared insights into his critical research on plastic pollution, highlighting his efforts to understand and mitigate the impacts of plastics in our ecosystems, especially in local waterways.

Our regular guest, Nate Drag from NY Sea Grant, followed with an engaging introduction to the CASCADE project. Nate explained how students will soon be actively involved in studying and addressing pollution through installing and monitoring specialized litter traps known as Litta-traps. In just a few weeks, SCESL students will begin analyzing the types and amounts of pollution that flow through storm drains and ultimately reach the Great Lakes.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Atkinson and Nate Drag for inspiring our students and providing meaningful opportunities for hands-on learning and environmental stewardship.
